AMD | “Steamdeck”

1 day shoot | Production & Post Production

Production Company: CamLock

Directors: Morgan & Nick

Producer: Buttons Pham

Editor: Ryan Girard

The Challenge:

How do you seamlessly take your viewer on a video game fueled, first person journey through coffee shops, subways and airplanes and shoot it in one day? This was the question the Camlock team was faced with when we first started our latest AMD | SteamDeck: Gaming Advanced

Directing for AMD in Austin

fix it in prep

Our prep started off like all other Camlock projects: A fully detailed animatic to get ideas on the screen and see what works and what doesn’t. Because our DP, Directors and Editor of the project are all in house we knew that whatever we concocted in the previz we’d be able to execute on the day.

PRE VIZ:

ACTUAL:

4 Spaces // 1 day

In order to make our virtual locations blend with our practical locations we brought in as many practical elements as we could. By keeping our lens and focal point consistent, using real background on green screen and implementing practical lighting where we could we were able to make our fake environments look a little more real.

The green screen

We wanted this spot to be told through the eyes of the viewer, so we decided we needed to shoot our hands and the SteamDeck as a plate on a green screen so we could keep our focus (literally) on what matters: The SteamDeck. As our subject moved from space to space our Gaffer, Galen, used the app “Blackout” and bluetooth controlled lights to produce practical, instantaneous lighting changes.

BUT IT’S ONLY 4 SHOTS…

We know what you’re thinking: "It’s only 4 shots… how hard could it be?”. Enter Shotlist. Because we didn’t know what gameplay would be on the SteamDeck we prepared a shotlist with a myriad of hand / product movements that would give our team plenty of options in the edit room. This allowed us to match up hand movements and location transitions perfectly without ever having our final reference.
